The Chalet Hepi Group Guide to Obertraun & Hallstatt

Welcome to your alpine basecamp! Whether your group is here for high-adrenaline adventure or slow-paced lakeside living, here is how to spend your days like a local.

1. Group Adventures on the Mountain

  • Dachstein Krippenstein (The “5 Fingers”): Just minutes from the chalet. Take the cable car up to 2,100m. The “5 Fingers” viewing platform is a must for a group photo—it juts out over a 400m drop with views of Lake Hallstatt.

  • The Giant Ice Cave: One of the most impressive natural wonders in the Alps. Guided tours are great for groups and provide a cool escape on a hot summer day.

  • Heilbronner Circular Trail: A relatively flat, high-altitude hike that is perfect for a group of 10. It’s scenic, social, and manageable for different fitness levels.

2. Lakeside Leisure

  • Private Boat Hire: Instead of the crowded ferry, rent several “Electric Boats” or a traditional wood-built “Zille” boat. Pack a picnic from the chalet and find a quiet spot in the middle of Lake Hallstatt to take in the views.

  • The Obertraun Lido: A short 5-minute walk from the chalet. It’s a massive park with a beach, beach volleyball, and plenty of space for 10 people to spread out towels and swim in the crystal-clear water.

3. The Hallstatt Experience (Without the Crowds)

  • Beat the Rush: Hallstatt is world-famous and can get busy. We recommend your group walk or take the early ferry (5 mins away) to arrive by 8:30 AM.

  • The Salt Mine & Skywalk: Take the funicular up to the world’s oldest salt mine. The tour includes a giant wooden slide that is a total blast for a group of friends.

4. Group Dining & Drinks

  • The Terrace BBQ: Don’t forget that some of the best nights are right at the chalet. Stock up on local meats and cheeses at the market and use the private barbecue for a sunset dinner.

  • Lodge Krippenstein: For a traditional Austrian mountain lunch, this is the place. They are very accommodating for large groups and serve the best Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancakes) in the region.

  • Seewirt Zauner (Hallstatt): If you want a “fancy” group dinner, this historic spot on the Market Square is famous for its lake-caught fish. Note: Reservations for 10 are essential!

5. Easy Group Logistics

  • Train Access: The Obertraun-Dachsteinhöhlen station is nearby, making day trips to Bad Ischl (the Imperial summer residence) or Salzburg incredibly easy for a large group.

  • Bike Rentals: Rent e-bikes in Obertraun and cycle the “East Bank Trail.” it’s mostly flat and hugs the water, offering incredible views without the heavy climbing.
